I shot a musket today

That's what my sticker says. And it was true on Jan. 4, when I took advantage of a unique opportunity offered by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to fire a couple of flintlock weapons — a military-style musket and a fowling piece. I was equally bad at both of them. It certainly didn't help that I was wearing eyeglasses, a surgical mask, protective glasses and ear protection and that I had to stop every few minutes to remove all that, wipe the fog from my glasses and put everything back on. But, if I'm being honest, that's just an excuse. If I'd never had to wipe my glasses, that still wouldn't have helped me hold up the musket — which, at about 10 pounds, is much heavier than it looks. My kind instructor took pity on me and supported it with one hand, all the while assuring me that I was still doing the aiming. Which I evidently did very badly, since when we went to inspect the target — a piece of paper covered with drawings of glass bottles — it was as pristine as when I started. Let's just say that the Redcoats wouldn't have had much to fear from me. But maybe one day — when I've built up a little more upper-body strength and can remember to aim my flintlock low — I'll give those Redcoats another shot.
